Not all my quizzes are showing up in the LockDown Browser Dashboard

$

For sites using D2L Brightspace, when one or more quizzes do not show in the LockDown Browser Dashboard, it is typically due to a "null" or an empty value in the D2L "Message" field. This field permits you to have a message presented to students upon test submission.  You can see this field by navigating to the course and quiz, then following this click path:

Edit Quiz->Submissions Views tab->Default View->View Properties->"Message".

This is a sporadic issue with D2L web services and might occur after a course copy. The quickest way to resolve the problem is to enter some text (even a blank space using the space key) in the "Message" field and save the quiz again.  If all quizzes in the course have this same problem, you will likely see this message when opening the LockDown Browser Dashboard:

"There are no deployed tests in this course."

Another symptom of a "null" or an empty value in the D2L "Message" field is that the quiz may experience problems when you try to update it from the LockDown Browser Dashboard LTI tool. Settings may not save correctly. Adding some text in the message field should resolve this problem.

No audio is coming from my microphone

If your microphone is not working correctly during a LockDown Browser session, the following steps may help resolve the problem:

1. First, reboot your computer. Once restarted, close down all applications that may use a microphone such as Skype, Facetime, Google+ and various utilities that may come with the webcam.

2. On Windows machines, if you have LockDown Browser version 2.0.1.00 or newer, start Google Chrome. If you get the webcam to work properly with Chrome, it should then work properly with LockDown Browser (they share the same plugin system). To see if the webcam is functioning properly on the computer, follow these instructions:

   a) If you don't already have Chrome installed on your computer, please download and install it: https://www.google.com/chrome/

   b) Launch Chrome and navigate to:  http://www.respondus.com/webcamtest/

3. If you're on a MAC, start Google Chrome and then navigate to:   http://www.respondus.com/webcamtest/

4. When the video appears, right click on the Adobe Flash module (the webcam image) and select "Settings."

5. Select the Microphone tab (second from bottom right).

6. Select the microphone and adjust the level (volume).

7. Start LockDown Browser and run the webcam check from the Webcam icon in the LockDown Browser toolbar to verify the settings.

This "scrolling to the top" issue is a known problem that began with OSX 10.10.  It's caused by an Apple bug, but is now fixed in OSX 10.11.3. We encourage you to upgrade to OSX 10.11.3 to resolve this problem.

Apart from upgrading, the only workaround available is to use the "text editor full screen" button (if available in your LMS) for any exam questions that require you to enter text. By clicking on this button, a full screen window will open and you'll avoid the cursor scrolling to the top.

Errors appear next to the quiz name in the LockDown Browser Dashboard with "Fix It" as an option

Under D2L Brightspace, "Fix it" errors can occur for quizzes if you have the LockDown Browser Dashboard external tool widget installed and configured, but then opt to toggle the LockDown Browser requirement on/off via the native "legacy" quiz settings instead. Those settings are found on the restrictions tab in the quiz settings, you'll see:

Security Options
Respondus LockDown Browser

__ Required to take this quizGet help on - Required to take this quiz
__ Required to view quiz feedback and resultsGet help on - Required to view quiz feedback and results

Fix it errors can also occur if you copy a course that has the legacy settings enabled (as shown above) then implement the LockDown Browser Dashboard for that course. The first time you launch the LockDown Browser Dashboard, you'll likely see "Fix it" errors due to the quiz titles needing to have our title decoration added (- requires Respondus LockDown Browser). Clicking on the "Fix it" button will resolve the problem.

Under Blackboard, these errors can result if changes are made to any of the following settings in Test Options:

1) Name

2) Open Test in a New Window

3) Require a password

4) Password

Accents For Languages

For security reasons, various modifier key combinations with the "ALT" key are blocked during a LockDown Browser-required exam. The best option is to switch to the localized keyboard layout from "US" to "Spanish" or "French" or "International" layout before starting LockDown Browser.

For Windows 7 computers, to switch to a keyboard with a different language: Go to Control Panel > Clock, Language, and Region > Region and Language. Select the Keyboards and Languages tab. Click on the "change keyboards" button.  This will open the "text services and input languages" window. If you haven't already added the keyboard necessary for your desired language, you can do so on this screen via the "add" button.

For Windows 8, 8.1 and 10 computers: Go to Control Panel\Clock, Language, and Region\Language. Click on "add a language" to add an input language. Once done, you can go to  Control Panel\Clock, Language, and Region and under the "Language" header click on "change input methods"

This article explains further

The other option is to change the modifier keys for keyboard switching in the Windows Control Panel->Region and Language->Keyboard and Languages->Change Keyboard...->Advanced Key Settings->"Change Key Sequence".

Also, for just a few accented characters, you can use the "Insert Symbol" icon in the LockDown Browser toolbar. This allows you to insert special/accented characters.

“You must close the following program before starting the browser.” Why does this occur?

Many types of applications are blocked from running at the same time as Respondus LockDown Browser. These include screen capture, messaging, screen-sharing, network monitors, and several other types of applications. These applications can be shut down prior to the start of Respondus LockDown Browser, or you can let the browser close them automatically when it is launched.

Where are the LockDown Browser and Respondus Monitor settings in D2L Brightspace?

The location of the LockDown Browser and Respondus Monitor settings in D2L Brightspace will depend on how your institution has set things up.

If the recommended integration method is used, an instructor will locate the LockDown Browser settings in D2L Brightspace by going to Quizzes and selecting the tab “LockDown Browser”. The “LockDown Browser Dashboard” is then displayed and the settings for LockDown Browser (and Respondus Monitor, if enabled) will be available. For complete details, see the Instructor Guide at http://www.respondus.com/products/lockdown-browser/guides.shtml.

However, if the LockDown Browser settings aren’t available as described above, your institution may be employing one of two older integration methods, depending on your version of Brightspace. (Both of these integration methods are being phased out as institutions update to D2L Brightspace 10.5.1+).

1) A “widget” for accessing the LockDown Browser Dashboard may be located within the course. The location of the widget can differ, so contact your institution’s D2L Brightspace administrator to determine its location.

or

2) The LockDown Browser settings may be located within D2L Brightspace's Quizzes > Restrictions tab. These settings are greatly abridged and exclude numerous LockDown Browser features (e.g. JAWS and accessibility support, the ability to exit the browser in an emergency, support for Respondus Monitor, support for iPads, etc.). More information can be found in the instructor guide at http://www.respondus.com/downloads/RLDB-Quick-Start-Guide-D2L-Instructor-Quiz-Setting.pdf.

“Unable to fetch server information from both primary and secondary mirror servers”

This error occurs when either your computer or network is blocking access to our servers. As a result, LockDown Browser cannot access and then load your institution's LMS.

The main server is hosted on Amazon S3 ( Amazon Web Services) with "www.respondus.com" as the mirror. If the LMS login page is not being loaded, then both are being blocked.  To troubleshoot this problem, the best place to start is to temporarily disable any firewalls and/or anti-virus software to see if that makes the difference.

If the problem persists, it's possible that the block might also be set in the router.

When starting LockDown Browser, I receive a message instructing me to uninstall "Asus Virtual Camera"

ASUS Virtual Camera is known to cause technical problems during exams that utilize Respondus Monitor (the webcam feature of LockDown Browser). As a result, students with the ASUS software installed will need to uninstall it before a LockDown Browser/Respondus Monitor session can continue.

To do this, you need to go to the Windows Control Panel > Programs > Uninstall a Program and select "Asus Virtual Camera."

D2L Brightspace - Why the LockDown Browser Dashboard is Not Opening for One Course

$
0
0

If the LockDown Browser Dashboard is successfully loading for many courses, but failing for one, the following are possible causes:

1. There may be an empty or corrupted value in the default "Submissions" message. Here is a KB article that deals with a related symptom of this:  http://support.respondus.com/support/index.php?/Knowledgebase/Article/View/223/19/not-all-my-quizzes-are-showing-up-in-the-lockdown-browser-dashboard

2. The Self-assessments or Survey tools are disabled in the specific course. These are required (along with the relevant instructor permissions for them) for the Dashboard to open. To check on this, go to Course Admin > Tools and make sure both of these tools have a check mark showing they are enabled.

3. One or more of the quizzes has an IP restriction.  The D2L SOAP API which the Dashboard uses does not permit this. You'll need to remove the IP restriction from all quizzes in the course before the Dashboard will successfully load.

Note: if the IP Restriction icon remains on the quiz (even after you've deleted the restriction from the quiz's "restrictions" tab) the Dashboard may still fail to load. If this occurs, a workaround is to delete the quizzes with the restriction, then create new ones. Otherwise, you will have to contact D2L to remove the icon.

4. The Instructor has invalid role permissions. Please refer to the LockDown Browser Administrator Guide, under the section "Instructor Roles and Permissions for IMS Configuration."

5. Invalid or special characters in quiz titles (such as colon, hash, ampersand, etc.)

If the LockDown Browser Dashboard will open for some courses, but not others, it may be caused by one of the following:

* there is an unacceptable symbol in the course title.
* there is an unacceptable symbol in one of the quiz titles.

Below is an example of an unacceptable symbol/image in a course title.

If you’re using the Mac version of LockDown Browser and the “Begin Exam” button seems to do nothing (or it takes you back to a previous step), please upgrade LockDown Browser to version 1.0.8.05 and higher.  The problem you're experiencing can sometimes occur after a Mac awakes from being put into Sleep mode, but has been fixed in LockDown Browser version 1.0.8.05.

To upgrade, start LockDown Browser, select “About” in the toolbar, and then click “Check for Update.” The version will be displayed and you will be able to download a newer version if one is available.

A student's test auto-submitted before they had finished it. Why?

$

0

Some learning management systems have a quiz setting that causes this behavior. In Blackboard, the setting is called "Forced Completion".  In D2L Brightspace, the setting is called "Auto-Submit Attempt."  Other learning management systems may have similar quiz settings.

If there is ever an interruption in the internet connection during the exam, these "Forced Completion" settings automatically submit the exam. This same behavior can occur if the student clicks on the "Refresh" icon.

In light of this, we do not recommend that these settings be used.

"No servers found for the institution that support auto launching"

$
0
0

This error can occur for "auto-launch" environments (D2L, Schoology) when any of the following are true:

1) Your Respondus server profile is hidden. You'll want to ensure that your server profile is set to "No" for the setting "Hide this server from LDB."

2) If you have multiple LockDown Browser "apps" installed on your Mac. You can only have one for auto-launch to work.  All extra LockDown Browser apps need to be moved to the trash, and then the trash should be emptied.

3) It's possible you have installed LockDown Browser using an installation package that contains the wrong institution ID. As a troubleshooting step, perform a reinstall of LockDown Browser, downloading the latest install package via your unique LockDown Browser download URL. Once the reinstall is performed, try taking the exam again.

4) For Schoology, if you have specified a URL of "app.schoology.com" for your Respondus server profile, you need to ensure that students are logging on using that URL. If your Respondus server profile has the "vanity" URL specified (example:  respondus.schoology.com) then students should log in using that URL.

5) For Windows users, it's possible that you might have multiple LockDown Browser shortcuts present, each with different institution ID's.  This is rare, but can occur when students need to use LockDown Browser to logon to more than one institution.  In such a scenario, you need to ensure that the actual installation of LockDown Browser on your computer directs you to the institution that is using auto-launch.

Does Respondus 4.0 support question types unique to the specific LMS?

$
0
0

The Respondus 4.0 Import Questions supports the import of the question types common to the majority of the supported learning management systems along with IMS QTI including multiple choice, true-false, multiple response, fill-in-the-blank, matching and essay. Most other question types that are unique to a specific learning management system (such as Moodle "Description", "Ordering", "Select Text", "Drag & Drop Text", and Blackboard Learn "Quiz Bowl") are not supported for import from text/Word files.

For question types unique to the LMS personality, we recommend entering the unique questions directly into Respondus->Edit. You can also enter the unique questions in a Moodle course and then retrieve the questions into a Respondus file.

Blackboard - The LockDown Browser Dashboard Doesn't open for One Course

$
0
0

Symptom: For one course, loading the Dashboard produces a STOP sign error with the text: "Unexpected Error. Please contact the system administrator".

If the Dashboard loads successfully for all courses but one, the very first thing to inspect are the quiz titles. If any of them have special characters (icons, photos, emoticons, etc.) this will prevent the LockDown Browser Dashboard from opening. Please remove all such special characters, and try opening the Dashboard again.

If you find this not to be the source of the problem, you should then investigate a possible corruption of the underlying data file associated with the Dashboard. This can occur from a course copy or restore of a much older course archive.

We recommend the Blackboard system administrator (with system level access), go into the Blackboard server at the system level and rename or move the "lockdown_browser_settings_do_not_delete" file from the system level "PPG" folder for the specific course.

For example, this is a path on one of our test servers:

/usr/local/blackboard/content/vi/BBLEARN/courses/1/TEST002/ppg/lockdown_browser_settings_do_not_delete

where "TEST002" is the course ID of the course. Please be aware that the starting path will be different on your server and folder naming mighty be slightly different with the version of Blackboard Learn.

Once the system administrator renames or moves the "lockdown_browser_settings_do_not_delete" file, the instructor will need to navigate to the course and launch the Dashboard to generate a new underlying settings file and verify all the tests have the LockDown Browser requirement.

Schoology - Our institution is Not Found in the LockDown Browser iPad "Search" Window

$
0
0

Schoology sites will not be able to find their institution when using the LockDown Browser iPad app search functionality.

This is because the iPad app should not be used to log in directly to Schoology. Rather, students should use the mobile Safari app to log in to Schoology, then launch the LockDown Browser app from the quiz.

"Start Quiz" Button is Missing

$
0
0

If the "Start Quiz" button is missing (both in a normal browser and LockDown Browser) in Canvas,  it's due to a Canvas bug with the start date for the course.

The default start date for the course comes from the term settings, but the start/end dates set at the course level are supposed to override the term dates. Canvas is wrongly referencing the term date rather than the date set at the course level. This problem will typically only occur for courses where the instructor is trying to get students to complete a quiz before the official start of the semester or term.

Example: The term is set to start on 5/10/2016. However, the instructor has set the start date for the course to 5/3/2016 to allow early access to the course.

To work around this bug, you may need to do one or more of the following:

* Set the start date for the term to the present date.

* Ensure there is a start and end date for the course.

*  Select the “Users can only participate in the course between these dates” checkbox.
