Using Voice-to-Text with LockDown Browser

Respondus LockDown Browser works with these programs that include voice-to-text functionality:

  • Mac Voice Control
  • Windows Speech Recognition

Mac Voice Control:

How to enable Voice Control:

  • Click on the Apple button in the top left and select “System Preferences”.
  • Go to “Accessibility” > “Voice Control” and click on the box next to “Enable Voice Control.”

How to use:

  • After enabling Voice Control, an overlay will appear in the lower right of the screen. You can temporarily mute the Voice Control so it does not listen for commands by clicking on the “Sleep” button on the overlay. You can then press ‘Wake up’ in the same place so that Voice Control listens for commands.

Sleep

  •  To turn speech into text within a LockDown Browser required exam, select the text field, say ‘Show keyboard’, and wait for the keyboard to appear.
show keyboard

  •  After doing so, you can then talk to type out words into text fields within the LockDown Browser required exam.

Note: Currently the text editor does not permit the Mac Voice Control’s voice-to-text feature to work on essay type questions in Canvas and Blackboard. This is a known issue outside of LockDown Browser.

Windows Speech Recognition:

In our testing, we have found that Windows Speech Recognition can have difficulty identifying what is said. To help improve the speech recognition, we recommend using a headset with a microphone.

How to start Speech Recognition:

  • Press Windows Start button and type “Control Panel” and select the first search result.
  •  Go to “Ease of Access” > “Speech Recognition” > “Start Speech Recognition”

How to use:

  • After starting Speech Recognition, an overlay will appear at the top of the screen.
  •  Select the microphone button to make the Speech Recognition hear your voice. Deselect the microphone button to ensure the software is not listening for commands.

  •  After clicking the button, you can enter text into text fields by speaking. This functionality will continue to work after opening Respondus LockDown Browser.

Note: Currently the text editor does not permit the Windows Speech Recognition’s voice-to-text feature to work on essay type questions in Canvas and Blackboard. This is a known issue outside of LockDown Browser.

Can a Chromebook be used with LockDown Browser and Respondus Monitor?

A “beta” release of a new Chromebook extension for LockDown Browser is currently available for exams delivered in the Instructure Canvas LMS. Both "Classic" and "New" quizzes are supported in Canvas.

This version of the LockDown Browser Chromebook extension also supports Respondus Monitor, an automated proctoring system used at over 1,000 colleges and universities.

During the beta phase, LockDown Browser license administrators will need to enable the Chromebook setting at the server level. The steps for doing this has been communicated directly to administrators.

Also during the beta period, instructors will need to allow the use of LockDown Browser for Chromebook on a per exam basis. From the LockDown Browser Dashboard, expand “Advanced Settings” and select the option to “Allow students to use LockDown Browser for Chromebook”. (If this setting doesn’t appear, it means the institution’s license administrator for LockDown Browser hasn’t yet enabled it at the server level.)

Students using a Chromebook will need to log into to their Canvas course, locate the exam that requires LockDown Browser, and select the link for downloading and installing LockDown Browser. This will direct the student to the Chrome web store, at which point they should select “Add to Chrome” to install the LockDown Browser Extension. If the instructor allows an exam to use the Chromebook version of LockDown Browser, it will automatically launch LockDown Browser at the appropriate time.

To obtain technical support, or to report a bug/issue, open a support ticket at www.respondus.com/support

Limitations and/or known issues with LockDown Browser for Chromebook (beta):

- Quiz passwords in Canvas aren’t currently supported

- The “Early Exit” feature in LockDown Browser isn’t currently supported

- LockDown Browser’s Calculator and Spreadsheet features aren’t currently supported

- The extended keyboard functions (for adding symbols and special characters) isn’t currently available

- When using “New Quizzes,” students currently encounter a warning that the browser can’t open this page (this can be ignored)

- LockDown Browser’s “Help Center” is currently unavailable

"Video connection timed out"

If you encounter the "Video connection timed out" error, please do the following:

1) Try clicking the "try again" button on that same page. This may permit the connection to be established. It's only necessary to click this button one time, as doing this makes a small network change.  But if the error persists, clicking the button multiple times will not help.

2) If the error persists, it's likely caused by a latency (delay) on your computer and/or network. This can include other devices on your network using bandwidth. The best thing for you to do is to exit LockDown Browser and restart your computer. After the restart, be sure to shut down all other running applications on both the computer and the network, including other network devices.  If using Wi-Fi, move as close to the router as possible.

3) Then start up LockDown Browser and try again.

4) If the problem persists, try using a different network, or a hardwired connection via an Ethernet cable.

Is LockDown Browser tested with each update of Windows?

Yes LockDown Browser is part of the Windows Compatibility Program at Microsoft.  Each pre-release of Windows is tested with LockDown Browser by Microsoft allowing Respondus to address any issues found before the Windows release is publicly available.

Exam title states a webcam must be used, but the exam settings don't indicate its selected

This error indicates there is either a problem with the exam's title, the exam's settings, or possibly with the navigational route the student is taking to the exam.

* The instructor should open the LockDown Browser Dashboard tool for the course and ensure no errors appear for the exam in question.  The opening of the tool for the course may resolve the problem. The course (or quiz) may be a copy, and hasn't yet had the LockDown Browser Dashboard opened for it. This is an LTI requirement after a copy is performed, otherwise the course and/or quiz is unknown to our servers.

* If requiring Respondus Monitor for the exam, ensure that the Monitor setting is enabled for the quiz. ("Required" should show up in the Monitor column of the LockDown Browser Dashboard)

* For Canvas and D2L Brightspace: if Monitor is required, the exam's title must end with:
"- Requires Respondus LockDown Browser + Webcam".

If it does not have that exact string, or something appears after that string, this could be the source of the problem.

* For Blackboard Learn:  if Monitor is required, the exam's title must be in this format:
QuizName (**Webcam**) - Requires Respondus LockDown Browser

* If Respondus Monitor is not meant to be enabled for the quiz, make sure that the word "webcam" does not appear anywhere in the quiz title.

* If the problem persists after performing the steps, then ensure the student is logging in to your LMS, then navigating first to the course, then to the quiz, avoiding all reminder and notification links to the quiz.

* Students will also need to ensure that their computer/network permits access to the Respondus Monitor server. One way to check this is to open LockDown Browser, log in, and navigate to a course. If the student sees the "Help Center" icon in the LockDown Browser toolbar, then access to the Respondus Monitor server is likely not being blocked.

Can a Chromebook be used with LockDown Browser? (K-12)

A “beta” release of a new Chromebook extension for LockDown Browser is currently available for exams delivered in Canvas (Classic and New Quizzes) and Blackboard Learn (Original view).  This solution is for student-owned devices and is distinct from the LockDown Browser for Chromebook application (kiosk app) currently available for “managed devices” (more on this below).

During the beta phase, the LockDown Browser license administrators will need to enable the Chromebook setting at the server level. The steps for doing this have been communicated directly to administrators.

Also, during the beta period, instructors will need to allow use of the new Chromebook extension on a per exam basis.

To install the new extension to a student-owned Chromebook, students will need to use the regular LockDown Browser installation link for your school (they will NOT be able to search for the app directly from the Chrome web store).  The LockDown Browser installation link will direct students to the Chrome web store, at which point they should select “Add to Chrome” to install the LockDown Browser Extension.

If the instructor allows an exam to use the new Chromebook extension for LockDown Browser, it will automatically launch the LockDown Browser extension at the start of the quiz.

Finally, students using a managed Chromebook will need to have the necessary permissions to  install Chrome extensions. Also note that this new extension can be installed on a managed Chromebook that already has the LockDown Browser "kiosk" app installed. The kiosk app doesn’t have to be uninstalled, and it can continue to be used as before.

Subdomain Support for Instructure Canvas

$

If you use Instructure Canvas as your LMS, LockDown Browser now supports the use of multiple LMS domains. Many institutions use a "vanity URL" for students to access their system.

For this to work, your designated Respondus admin needs to specify the necessary domains in the "Additional Subdomains" field of the Respondus server profile.  Domains should be separated by a comma, and cannot be the same root domain that is already being used in the Respondus server profile, nor any SSO / authentication servers.

Example:  respondus.com,respondus.edu

To modify the Respondus server profile, log in to the Respondus Admin Area at:
https://campusportal.respondus.com/campus-portal/login.php

Once logged in, select "LockDown Browser and Respondus Monitor" > Control Panel, then click "modify settings" for the relevant profile.

Students will also need to use LockDown Browser version 2.0.6.09 or newer (Windows and Mac), and LockDown Browser for iPad version 8.5 or newer.

This feature is only available for Instructure Canvas.
