VDP Source has been known to cause performance issues during exams requiring Respondus Monitor (the webcam feature of LockDown Browser.) As a result, it is necessary to first remove the software in order to proceed with a Monitor-required exam. You can use the steps outlined in the attached PDF to help determine if VDP Source is installed on your computer.

If it is installed on your computer, when taking an exam that requires Respondus Monitor, you may see this error message:

The Bluetooth VDP Source Webcam must be uninstalled from your computer to use the webcam feature of LockDown Browser.
Once completed, restart LockDown Browser.

To remove the Bluetooth VDP Source software, please follow the below steps. It is very important to not remove any software other than what is mentioned below. To do otherwise could negatively impact your computer's performance.

1) Go to Windows Control Panel and find the listing of your installed programs. This can be done via Control Panel\Programs\Programs and Features. Click on "uninstall a program."
2) In the program listing that appears, look for “Intel(R)PROSet/Wireless Software for Bluetooth(R) Technology." Right click on this program and select "Change".
3) You will see a welcome screen from INTEL, inviting you to proceed into the setup wizard. To accept, click "Next."
4) You will be presented with a window titled "Change, Repair or Remove Installation." Choose "Remove" and click "Next."
5) Accept any confirmation windows that appear by clicking "OK."
6) Reboot your computer.

After following these steps, the program should be removed from your computer and the error should be resolved.

Update Check Failed: Error Code a4

This LockDown Browser-Mac error is similar to the LockDown Browser-Windows error discussed in the knowledgebase article, "Update server connection is blocked or not available".

For LockDown Browser-Mac, the "Update Check failed" warning typically indicates security settings or another application is blocking access to the Respondus servers that LockDown Browser accesses at start-up. This can happen when your internet connection fails, or when security settings or another application blocks access to the Respondus servers.

Please verify LockDown Browser can access the following domains at start-up:

respondus2.com
respondus.com
static-public-downloads-cloud.respondus.com

These domains may need to be added as "trusted sites" in security settings on the local computer and may need to be added to network firewalls or routers. For Macs, you should check settings in System Preferences->Security & Privacy.

We also recommend doing a complete power down and restart of your Mac.

For Macs, the "a4 error" can be due to permissions issues with the specific user account on the Mac. Some students have found creating another user account with "Allow user to administer this computer", restarting the Mac and logging with the new user account allowed them to start LockDown Browser.

How can I change my webcam?

If you have an external USB webcam that you desire to use, rather than the built in webcam on your computer, you can change the camera during the webcam check via the "change my webcam" link. You can also use this feature if your computer has front/rear facing cameras.

webcam1

Clicking on that link will produce a list of the cameras that we have detected are connected to your computer.

webcam2

We have a webcam test page you can try this with. Go to: http://www.respondus.com/webcamtest/

Respondus LockDown Browser for Mac uses the same system components and settings that make up Safari. It does not modify an existing copy of the browser, but rather, installs a separate program that will display the custom interface when it is started. In sum, installing Respondus LockDown Browser won’t modify the current version of Safari, but will use the same system components and security settings that are installed.

The iPad Edition of "LockDown Browser" available from iTunes enables a student to use an iPad to take exams that require LockDown Browser. However, your instructor must first select a setting that permits the use of iPads for the exam and your school's learning management system must be compatible.

A student should follow these steps to take an exam with the iPad Edition of LockDown Browser:

  1. Download and install the "LockDown Browser" app from Apple iTunes to the iPad. (Requires iOS 7 or higher.)
  2. Enable iPad's "Guided Access" by selecting iPad > Settings > General > Accessibility > Guided Access. Turn on Guided Access and set a passcode (you need to remember this passcode to exit Guided Access after an exam). The setup for Guided Access only needs to be done once.
  3. Start the LockDown Browser app.
  4. The first time the app is used, you will be prompted to select your institution and server. (If you later need to change the institution or server, select the settings icon on the LockDown Browser toolbar.)
  5. Triple-press the iPad home button to start Guided Access and enter LockDown Browser.
  6. After completing the exam, triple-press the home button and enter the passcode to exit Guided Access.
  7. Press the Home button again to return to the Home page.

If the below troubleshooting steps are not successful, using an external USB webcam is recommended.

For Windows users:

1) Delete the Adobe Flash cache:

a) For Windows 7 and 10 users, you can locate the Flash Player Settings Manager by navigating to Control Panel > Control Panel\System and Security. Click on the icon at the bottom of the page.
b) For Windows 8 users, you can most easily locate the Flash Player Settings Manager by typing F-L-A on the start page.
c) Once you locate the manager, select the "advanced" tab and under the header "Browsing Data and Settings" click on the button for "Delete All."  Then exit the manager.

2) Open Firefox or Internet Explorer. Navigate to: http://www.respondus.com/webcamtest/
Do NOT use the Chrome browser for this step.

3) Select Allow & Remember, and then click on Close.
If you do not see your image using the above webcam test page, you also will not see it when in LDB.

4) Start LockDown Browser, click on the webcam icon in the LockDown Browser toolbar. Click "Begin Webcam Check" and agree to the "Terms of Use."
If Steps 1-3 were successful, the settings you specified should be remembered and you should see your image.

5) Logon to your school's Learning Management System, navigate to your course and take your LDB/Monitor required exam.

For Mac users:

1) Navigate to System Preferences > Flash Player->"Storage" Tab > and under the "Local Storage Settings" header, click on the button for "Delete All."

2) In the same Flash Player settings screen, choose the "advanced" tab and under the "Browsing Data and Settings" header, click on "Delete all."

3) Click on the "Camera and Mic" tab then click on "Camera and Microphone settings by Site."  Add the following site to the list: smc-service-cloud.respondus2.com
Make sure you mark that site as set to "Allow."

4) Open your Safari browser, select "Safari" in the upper toolbar menu, then "Clear History and Website Data." Select "all history" in the available field, and click on the button for "clear history."

5) In the Safari browser, select "Safari" in the upper toolbar menu, then "Preferences". In the window that opens, select "Privacy" in the menu at the top. In the section labeled "Cookies and website data," click on the button that says "remove all website data." Then select "always allow" in the list right above that button. After this is done, exit the window.

6) With the Safari browser open this site: http://www.respondus.com/webcamtest/

7) If prompted, select "Allow" and "Remember" and take the short webcam test. If all works well, you should see similar results in LockDown Browser.

If the problem persists, determine if you are running any third party security software. If so, disable it temporarily and test again.
You should also open System Preferences->Security & Privacy and determine if you have FileVault and Firewall enabled. If so, turn them off and test again.

ASUS Virtual Camera is known to cause technical problems during exams that utilize Respondus Monitor (the webcam feature of LockDown Browser). As a result, students with the ASUS software installed will need to uninstall it before a LockDown Browser/Respondus Monitor session can continue.

To do this, you need to go to the Windows Control Panel > Programs > Uninstall a Program and select "Asus Virtual Camera."

If your microphone is not working correctly during a LockDown Browser session, the following steps may help resolve the problem:

1. Close down all applications that may use a microphone such as Skype, Facetime, Google+ and various utilities that may come with the webcam.

2. On Windows machines, start Firefox. If you get the webcam to work properly with Firefox, it will then work properly with LockDown Browser (they share the same plugin system). To see if the webcam is functioning properly on the computer, follow these instructions:

   a) If you don't already have Firefox installed in your computer, please download and install it: https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/

   b) Launch Firefox and navigate to:  http://www.respondus.com/webcamtest/

3. If you're on a MAC, start Safari (not Firefox or Google Chrome) and then navigate to:   http://www.respondus.com/webcamtest/

4. When the video appears, right click on the Adobe Flash module (the webcam image) and select "Settings."

5. Select the Microphone tab (second from bottom right).

6. Select the microphone and adjust the level (volume).

7. Start LockDown Browser and run the webcam check from the Webcam icon in the LockDown Browser toolbar to verify the settings.

Accents for languages during LockDown Browser-required exam

For security reasons, various modifier key combinations with the "ALT" key are blocked during a LockDown Browser-required exam. The best option is to switch to the localized keyboard layout from "US" to "Spanish" or "French" or "International" layout before starting LockDown Browser.

For Windows 7 machines, to switch to a keyboard with a different language: Go to Control Panel > Clock, Language, and Region > Region and Language. Select the Keyboards and Languages tab. Click on the "change keyboards" button.  This will open the "text services and input languages" window. If you haven't already added the keyboard necessary for your desired language, you can do so on this screen via the "add" button.

For Windows 8 and 8.1 machines: Go to Control Panel\Clock, Language, and Region\Language. Click on "add a language" to add an input language. Once done, you can go to  Control Panel\Clock, Language, and Region and under the "Language" header click on "change input methods"

The other option is to change the modifier keys for keyboard switching in the Windows Control Panel->Region and Language->Keyboard and Languages->Change Keyboard...->Advanced Key Settings->"Change Key Sequence".

Also, for just a few accented characters, you can use the "Insert Symbol" icon at the top of the LockDown Browser window, which allows you to insert special/accented characters.

Where are the LockDown Browser and Respondus Monitor settings in ...

Q: Where are the LockDown Browser and Respondus Monitor settings in Brightspace?

A: The location of the LockDown Browser and Respondus Monitor settings in Brightspace will depend on how your institution has set things up.

If the recommended integration method is used, an instructor will locate the LockDown Browser settings in Brightspace by going to Quizzes and selecting the tab “LockDown Browser”. The “LockDown Browser Dashboard” is then displayed and the settings for LockDown Browser (and Respondus Monitor, if enabled) will be available. For complete details, see the Instructor Guide at http://www.respondus.com/products/lockdown-browser/guides.shtml.

However, if the LockDown Browser settings aren’t available as described above, your institution may be employing one of two older integration methods, depending on your version of Brightspace. (Both of these integration methods are being phased out as institutions update to Brightspace 10.5.1+).

1) A “widget” for accessing the LockDown Browser Dashboard may be located within the course. The location of the widget can differ, so contact your institution’s Brightspace administrator to determine its location.

or

2) The LockDown Browser settings may be located within Brightspace’s Quizzes > Restrictions tab. These settings are greatly abridged and exclude numerous LockDown Browser features (e.g. JAWS and accessibility support, the ability to exit the browser in an emergency, support for Respondus Monitor, support for iPads, etc.). More information can be found in the instructor guide at http://www.respondus.com/downloads/RLDB-Quick-Start-Guide-D2L-Instructor-Quiz-Setting.pdf.

Not all my quizzes are showing up in the LockDown Browser Dashboa...

For sites using D2L, when one or more quizzes do not show in the LockDown Browser Dashboard, it is typically due to a "null" or an empty value in the D2L "Message" field. This field permits you to have a message presented to students upon test submission.  You can see this field by navigating to the course and quiz, then following this click path:

Edit Quiz->Submissions Views tab->Default View->View Properties->"Message".

This is a sporadic issue with D2L web services and might occur after a course copy. The quickest way to resolve the problem is to enter some text in the "Message" field and save the quiz again.  If all quizzes in the course have this same problem, you will likely see this message when opening the LDB Dashboard:

"There are no deployed tests in this course."

If you log in to your school's Learning Management System (Blackboard, Canvas, D2L, etc) and see a message "The browser doesn’t meet the minimum requirements," it's telling you that the version of the Mac OS X and underlying version of Safari on your Mac is not compatible with the LMS.

LockDown Browser-Mac uses the same system components that also makes up Safari and will appear as Safari in any LMS server logs.

At this time, Instructure Canvas supports Safari 8 and 9 on Mac OS X 10.9 Mavericks and newer. For more info: http://guides.instructure.com/s/2204/m/4214/l/41056-which-browsers-does-canvas-support

Students with Mac OS X 10.7 Lion will need to update to Mac OS X 10.9 Mavericks or newer to meet Instructure's browser requirements.

If the deadline for an exam is near, we suggest the students locate another computer, Windows or Mac, with LockDown Browser. There is also LockDown Browser for iPad if allowed by the instructor.

Using multiple language keyboards with LockDown Browser

You can use a variety of language keyboards within a LockDown Browser exam. This can be achieved by using "Advanced Key Settings" to set up key combinations that will allow you to switch between keyboards. A helpful document with screen prints is attached.

A student's test auto-submitted before they had finished it. Why?

Some learning management systems have a quiz setting that causes this behavior. In Blackboard, the setting is called "Forced Completion".  In D2L, the setting is called "Auto-Submit Attempt."  Other learning management systems may have similar quiz settings.

If there is ever an interruption in the internet connection during the exam, these "Forced Completion" settings automatically submit the exam. This same behavior can occur if the student clicks on the "Refresh" icon.

In light of this, we do not recommend that these settings be used.

This "scrolling to the top" issue is a known problem that began with OSX 10.10/Safari.  The problem also occurs with OSX 10.11 (El Capitan).  We hope Apple will address the problem and fix it in a future update.

The only workaround available is to use the "text editor full screen" button (if available in your LMS) for any exam questions that require you to enter text. By clicking on this button, a full screen window will open and you'll avoid the cursor scrolling to the top.
